The Day the Earth Stood Still

This modern day remake of the 1950s classic of the same name follows closely in the footsteps of it’s predecessor. An alien ambassador named Klaatu, played by Keanu Reeves, arrives on earth accompanied by a towering robotic protector proclaiming that the human race is destroying the earth and must be eradicated to ensure the planets survival.

Keanu Reeves just manages to convince as the icy, emotionless outsider, but its his supporting cast that make this film almost unbearable. Jennifer Connerly and Jaden Smith are unable to convey any sort of emotional connection as mother and step son. Kathy Bates delivers an implausible performance as the secretary of defence and in his cameo role as a noble prize winning professor, John Cleese is awkward and uncomfortable to watch.

The cinematography is gritty in an attempt to instill a sense of impending doom, although the result gives the film a rather unimpressive and clumsy finish. The CGI effects are awful and certain scenes within the film only just pass as acceptable and are not even on par with films far older.

The script is poorly conceived and offers little for the audience by way of emotional connection which results in absolutely no compassion being felt for any of the cast. We should be rooting for the human race to win, I was rooting for the film to end, and then it did, all too abruptly and without any explanation as to why or what the result of Klaatus visit would achieve.

In short this film is neither interesting or entertaining and certainly one to miss, there are far better science fiction films to be seen.

Score: 2/10

I hadn’t seen the original so when I started to watch this (in the sky half way over the Atlantic) I had an idea in mind from a preview I saw – I thought this literally was about the Earth standing still.

I thought that it would be about half the planet living in darkness and that leading to war, economic/climate/environmental effects…. not about aliens.

Your score of 2/10 is accurate in my opinion. I enjoyed the turbulence more.

    Hi Matt,

Thanks for the comment, I must admit, I think you’re onto something there! That sounds like an awesome idea for a film narrative, it certainly hasn’t been done before! How can we get the ball rolling?

Can’t say I’d agree with the turbulance though, last I experienced was four hours non-stop coming home from Las Vegas. It was extreme to say the least, soemthing you only ever see in films! Lets just say I made a swift trip to the toilets as soon as I got off the plane!
