But I, being poor, have only my dreams…
I’m no poet, and if I’m honest, poetry is something I very rarely enjoy reading. However, I find this short poem by Yeats truly inspirational and, just in case you haven’t heard it before, thought I would share it with you.
He wishes for the cloths of heaven
Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
- William Butler Yeats -
I first heard an excerpt of this poem in the 2002 film Equilibrium and since then this has been my ‘inspirational quote’. It wasn’t until later on that I realised it was part of this much longer poem.
Do you have any inspirational poems you would like to share?
